Persepolis reaction

Well I am done with the assigned reading of Persepolis for the class. So far I think the book has been pretty good. It is nice to see what it is like in a different culture especially when they are a topic that comes up in the news frequently. I think the book being in graphic novel format definitely made the book more interesting and easier to read. If it was just a regular novel I think I would of gotten bored of it really fast. Also since we don't know the culture very well it would be hard to picture the book in our minds and I feel like the pictures in the book help me with that. All in all, its a good book and i'm hoping that in this last week of senior year I have enough motivation to finish the book on my own.

Slaughterhouse-five

While reading this book slaughterhouse-five I can help but be reminded of a book I read in 7th grade. It had the same writing style of jumping back and forth between the present and the past.

The book is about a teenage father trying to take care of his infant daughter. It skips back and forth between his girlfriend Nia's pregnancy and him struggling to care of an infant. Because of the skipping back and forth between the future and the present it keeps the book interesting. It gives a good insight to what it is like to be a teen parent and the choices you are forced to make.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes the style of Slaughterhouse-five.

War Movie

I don't watch war movies so they only one I can really think of is the Disney Movie Mulan.

The movie is about when a war in China breaks out and the emperor requires one male from each family to fight. When Mulan realizes that her elderly father has to fight because he is the only male in her family she takes matters into her own hands. She dresses up as a guy changes her name to Ping and joins the army. Her father learns what she has done and prays to her ancestors to protect her. A small dragon named Mushu is sent to help and guide her. The movie goes on to show her troubles and victories in the war.

Although it did have scenes of villages burnt down and an important character gets killed, the last like battle scene in the movie glorifies it a little bit. It has humor in it which nothing during war is funny. I think the writers of this movie had to do this since the movie is for kids. They can't like show stuff that would disturb the kids and they have to keep them interested.

I think this movie and slaughterhouse-five are different. First and foremost no one gets abducted by animals. Second, Slaughterhouse shows scences of war that little kids shouldn't see and there was a lot of dying in it. This book is definitely not intended for children to read opposed to the movie Mulan which is meant for kids.

Mary O'Hare would not like this movie. It makes war seem fun and like no one really gets hurt. Also it doesn't show any horrific war scences that usually come with war. She would yell about this movie like she yelled in the book.

Heroes!

We talked about heroes the other day in college lit and it got me thinking. I was thinking about all the good heroes there are but I just can't think of one that is better than Harry Potter. Harry had the courage to save the wizarding world and the muggle world in every single book! He could of turned evil too when Voltemort in the first book asked him to join his army of followers (death eaters) but Harry refused! He is a model citizen to anyone, muggle or witch/wizard. So I challenge people to come up with a better hero than him. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!

Groups

I think the time I felt the most like I was apart of the group was in Mexico this year during spring break. There was about 20 of us that went and I had so much fun. I felt like I was in a group because we all hung out together and we were surrounded by strangers. At school I don't usually have this feeling with that group of people because there is so many people here that its easy to lose touch. But in Mexico we all hung out every night and got to bond. Also I felt like I was in the group there because we all had inside jokes and other people from the hotel kind of looked at us weird because they didn't get them.

r.i.p mexico  :(((((

Reaction to the book

Last night I finished the book Metamorphosis and I have to say I was very disappointed. The book in my opinion wasn't very eventful. Most of the book was about Gregor sitting in his room and his sister cleaning it. The ending didn't satisfy me either. I don't know if I'm missing some hidden meaning in the story because I just not get it at all. If anyone knows of anything, LET ME KNOW!

My Metamorphosis :) ;) :p :D

I wake up from a long night sleep. I get up and get ready to go to my dreadful job. As I stumble out of bed, I feel a lot shorter for some reason. I must still be half asleep, I thougtht to myself. I rub my eyes and go to the mirror. Am I dreaming? I have to be... I am not some cute cuddly puppy. I go to my bed and and try to re-awake quickly so I'm not late for work. I get up again and realize that didn't work. So next I go to the sink and splash some water on my face. Oh wait I can't, I have paws. Maybe this is real. I thought to myself again, I could have eaten a fortune cookie like in "Freaky Friday" and now i'm in a different body. The doorbell rang and I thought, oh great it's my boss. My sister comes and and screams with excitement. She thinks I'm an early birthday gift. Now I'm stuck as the family pet while my parents think I was abducted. Woo hoo

End of Moodle!

We are finally done with moodle and I have to say I am pretty excited. Although I really liked the assignments because they were creative and interesting, there was just too much of them. But other than that, I really liked the book "Leftovers." It was about two girls who were both ignored by their families but in different ways. Blair was ignored by her parents because they were more interested in their work than her. Her mom was too busy trying to impress people and working for a promotion to care or spend time with Blair. Ardith was the second girl and she lives in a house that is always full of partying. Her older brother is constantly having parties and her parents also party with them. The book goes on to follow the girls throughout 3 years and shows a perspective of being a leftover. It definitely doesn't ever get dry and is full of excitement. I recommend this to anyone but especially girls!

I think so far in college lit my favorite piece we have read is "The Smile On Happy Chang's Face." I liked it because it gave a perspective of a guy (Jack the umpire) who is an outsider and how he got there. I was so shocked that he was able to hit his own child. It is sad that people have that kind of reactions to people who are different especially if its their own children. Towards the end of the story I actually started to feel bad for him because he regretted what he did and he wanted his family back. I know that sometimes in my life I wish there was a rewind button and I think Jack would agree with me on that one.

Intro

My interests include reading, hanging out with friends, fishing, bonfires, going to concerts, going to my cabin, and boating. Next year I am attending UW-Oshkosh and probably majoring in accounting. My favorite book is anyone of the Harry Potter books. My favorite movie of all time is Tommy Boy but I love anything with Chris Farley in it. Lastly, my favorite musician is Brad Paisley.
