What is your favorite restaurant in McFarland?

I think so far in college lit my favorite piece we have read is "The Smile On Happy Chang's Face." I liked it because it gave a perspective of a guy (Jack the umpire) who is an outsider and how he got there. I was so shocked that he was able to hit his own child. It is sad that people have that kind of reactions to people who are different especially if its their own children. Towards the end of the story I actually started to feel bad for him because he regretted what he did and he wanted his family back. I know that sometimes in my life I wish there was a rewind button and I think Jack would agree with me on that one.

  1. I also really liked this piece. I thought it was interesting how he hurt his son because he was an outsider in his eyes, and then he himself ends up feeling like an outsider later on in the book. I definitely felt the same way at the end of the book towards him, because he had really reflected on the past and wished he could change things.

  2. I was a bit disappointed in how it ended where he though that he, excuse the cliche, "went out in a blaze of glory", having finally shown his admitance to his problems. Then, when he watches it on TV he is disappointed to see that he instead looks like a man who trying to run away and not face his problems. This seems to suggest that people can't come back after making mistakes and fix them which is a bit depressing.

  3. I agree Aly! This piece was great. I always like sports stories, and this one had a great moral to it. I thought it was interesting on how he could dislike his son so much just because of his life choices. Also I agree with Kevin, the ending was a little abrubt but it was an overall good story

  4. Aly, I agree 100%! It really made you feel bad for the guy even though he did it to himself. I was not disappointed with this at all unlike kevin. It really kept my interest and made me want to read more.

  5. I'm kind of sad that I didn't read that story, but the idea of abusing children is pretty huge. We had a huge discussion about it in Philosophy the other week. We talked about how can hitting your children ever be a good thing? And I think you gave a good reason why it could be-- the act probably made the father realize something, since you make it seem like he regreted it. Either way, it's still a pretty horrible thing.

  6. I tottaly agree. He does regret it, in fact he regrets it so much that he wants him to watch the baseball game. He knows he made a mistake and he wishes he could do anything in the world to make it up.
